This session brought together different actors within the higher education ecosystem to share best practices and lessons learned for implementing a whole-of-institution approach to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and working with the SDGs on an institutional level, as well as the tools and partnerships that have made it possible. The session illustrated the importance and the benefits that a whole-of-institution approach to ESD can bring to a university and the reciprocal role that a university plays in advancing sustainable development research, supporting communities, and preparing the next generation

Education

Education for all has always been an integral part of the sustainable development agenda. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002 adopted the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) which in its Section X, reaffirmed both the Millennium Development Goal 2 in achieving universal primary education by 2015 and the goal of the Dakar Framework for Action on Education for All to eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education by 2005 and at all levels of education by 2015. The JPOI addressed the need to integrate sustainable development into formal education at all levels, as well as through informal and non-formal education opportunities.

Higher Education for Sustainable Development

The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI), launched in the lead-up to the Rio+20 Conference in 2012 as an open partnership between several United Nations entities and the higher education community, aims to enhance the role of the higher education sector in advancing sustainable development by facilitating multi-stakeholder discussions, actions, and the dissemination of best practices.
